Malin to Mizen - Day 2 - Athlone to Mallow
2009.09.19 19:33:33

Well we made Mallow Co.Cork by 6pm, good going over 130 miles in 7.5 hours considering we thought the journey was going to be as uncomfortable as yesterday, however gravity was on our side today and played a reasonably neutral part all day not throwing anything at us like the hills and crescents we encountered up North.

A slight bit of dampness moistened the road in front of us from Athlone to Borrisokane, but after that, we were delighted to travel in 24deg of sunshine down through Limerick and into Co.Cork. I guess the highlight of the day must have been in convoy along the new Limerick bypass the M20 - lets not mention the word motorway & 49cc motorbikes in the course of the conversation .The weather was the same as peak season summer and we really could have been anywhere in the world, but no, we were in Ireland and spending our Saturday as good as we could have done.

No major problems again today, all bikes were on their best behavious,, a broken speedo cable on one of the bikes was a slight problem but not a show stopper, so along the way we took a detour into Meskell Motorcyles, Lisnagry, Dublin Road, Limerick (www.meskellmotorcycles.com) which was just a haven of all sorts of motorbikes and parts, so the say the whole gang were like children in a sweet shop was an understatement, so when we were offered a root through a box of speedo cables, one was found which was correct size and shape and in five minutes, with Matties help the cable was replaced and all bikes were back 100% on the road. we didn't want to leave the bike shop, but the draw of more sun and fresh air on the bikes and the Limerick bypass drew us out.

Mallow greeted us with open arms, the bikes temporarily held up events on the main street while the hotel was located, so as you do, a diversion up the footpath with all bikes in tow to brought us to an eager rest in the the car park of the hotel.

Dinner at 8:30 and a couple of drinks with a well earned rest will leave all bikers thinking about the "short" run of 87 miles to Mizen head tomorrow..

Roll on tomorrow morning and see what awaits us...

Malin to Mizen - Day 1 - Arrival in Athlone 182 miles later
2009.09.18 23:15:36

ok, so we've all arrived in Athlone without any problems, we unfortunately have been infected with the N1H1 Jet Lag virus, I hope its not contagious, we all have it for some reason, and its probably going to get worse tomorrow. The affects are extreme bouts of tiredness.Today we travelled 182 miles which took us 11 hours, having set off from Malin head this morning at 08:30. First things first, out departure from Malin head started with our arrival at 08:00 too get the bikes out of the van (Thanks Philip), refreshed and stuffed from our fantastic breaking in the White Strand B&B (Highly recommended if youre staying up near Malon head for €32 per person including a huge breakfeast). The Cork and Kerry lads were already there having travelled up though the night from Killarney and taking them 8 hours in the process, anyway, while we tried to wake up from our nice few pints the night before, our friends from down south were fighting off the pains of sleep which to them was only an inconvenience for a few hours, not big deal to hard men :)

Suited up and the photographs taken, we all headed off down the mountain for Malin Town, the Sun was just climbing into the blue sky, the temperature was about average and the humour was just mighty. Once the bikes started up and began to move, it was nice to look back and see the tower on Malin head disappear behind us, our momentous occasion of once again visiting Malin head was this time taken over by motorbike helmets and getting into our clothing while the much preparred southern possy looked on with intent to start the challenge. The first casualty was 5 miles into the run - Noel Brosnan from Killarney, decided the night before that a Kerry Pint (75ml) was sufficient to get him as far as Athlone on the same day, never in all his wildest dreams did he think his precious Honda C50 would look for juice before miles were clocked up, anyway a slight traffic jam at the side of the road highlighted the kerry pint for what it was and only for one of the other bikes going by had spare petrol on the back carrier, then who knows what would have happened to Noel tonigt, anyway, spare fuel topped Noel up and we begain the long ardous journey from Malin to Athlone.

unfortunately tiredness tonight in the form of Jet lag is kicking in, it must be said that 180 miles on a Honda c50 is no easy feat, so regardless of what happens or is said tomorrow, we will always remember our first 180 miles, the sorest, most uncomfortable best days fun we have had in ages....

stay tuned, tomorrow we only need to travel about 135 miles,

Watch this space tomorrow night for another updates of our the run.

Sure what more is left to do after this one :)

Speak to you soon,...

Fasteddie.

Malin to Mizen - The night before !
2009.09.18 01:29:33

Well after 5 hours in the transit van from Ashbourne Co.Meath and listening to Philip talking about second hand tyres from Germany (thanks for the lift up Philip)_ we arrived in Malin Town only to find it a bit quiet and slightly deserted, so a quick call to John Jo who was in the other van driving up to Malin head from Kildare, we continued on the road out to Malin head and followed the sign for "Malin Hostel", next left brought us to our B+B called "Whitestrand Holiday Accommodation, this is near Malin Head in Inisowen Co.Donegal in Mary Houghton's B+B self catering accommodation, all for €32 we got tea, sandwiches, cake and more tea upon arrival as we bumped into out friends from Allenwood in Co.Kildare (James, John Jo, and Mickey Dickey. Once the teas and buns were washed down we promptly headed for the local boozer called the "North Pole", now you can imagine the problems with this for tourists asking directions, hello, I'm looking for the most Northerly Pub in Ireland,,,,,yes, continue along this road for five miles, turn right for the "North Pole" and its up on the hill behind the white house, you would know you are not in Dublin or Ashbourne (Bring me back to Kelly's in Ashbourne) so after a couple of scoops and having the crack with the locals about our plans for a crazy drive tomorrow down south, we headed back to our self catering accommodation called Gortnamullan Cottage, somehow its going to be hard to leave here tomorrow, we travelled up some big hills here this evening, it might be just easier to stay here for the weekend and go home as normal, but, hmm, forgetting what we are here for will not do us any favours,  I guess we need some sleep as we have a 7am start for breakfeast before our long run in the morning, good luck to the rest of the lads travelling up over night from Killarney Co.Kerry, I guess we will have a head start with at least 5 hours sleep, speaking of which, I better head there now myself before the put put sounds keep me entertained for many hours to come yet tomrrow. More updates tomorrow night. Hopefully they will be trouble free and I can talk to you from Athlone.....

Ciao.
